ABOUT FINCA SALVAJE

Finca Salvaje is located within the Dr. Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor, and is 1 km from the 300 acre reserve where he studied the birds of the tropics and wrote many books on ornithology. The name of his reserve is "Los Cusingos" - maintained now by the Centro Scientifico Tropico and open to the public.

Finca Salvaje is bordered on two sides by rivers and two sides by virgin jungle. Situated as such, the tropical birds studied by Dr Skutch are daily visitors to the farm. Different varieties of Parrots, Toucans, Hummingbirds, Falcons, Cuyeos, Flycatchers, Tanagers and others are common sightings.

This is a working cattle farm, supporting 40 cattle on its 80 acres. Calves are born year 'round in this climate, which translates into fresh milk for the table! Of course we have chickens, horses and a big dog. Oh! and what farm would be complete without tepescuintle!? Finca Salvaje, in cooperation with MINAE (the Costa Rican equivalent of the Forestry Dept) is raising these unfortunately delicious wild animals for re-introduction into the wild.

The primary view from the farmhouse is of Chirripo, the tallest peak in Costa Rica. Breathtaking in the mornings as the misty clouds fill the valleys and finally settle for the day, resting atop the peaks.

The two rivers that border the property-Caliente and Calientio- are transforming. The one who named these rivers was not referring to their physical temperature...they are cool mountain water rivers. Time and time again, I watch people as they approach the water, watch them as they become quiet within the noise of the gurgling, tinkling or rushing water (depends on the time of year) , slip off their shoes, stick in their toes and smile with childlike joy, the joy that comes with experiencing life wih our senses. There are multiple access points to the rivers, some places are accessable by car, others by hiking well-maintained trails.

The area is agricultural rather than touristic. The people are very generous and patient with communication, but many have little or no experience with English.
